Stock traders: Can you trade the news announcements?

It seems to me that if a company, such as a pharmaceutical, is about to make an announcement of product testing results, extreme volatility is in the winds. This would probably not work with quarterly earnings though, since that information often leaks. So, for certain announcements, can profits be made by issuing short sell orders if the stock falls to say 0.5% below its price, and buying orders if it rises to 0.5% above its price. These orders would be placed immediately before the announcement, then exited either before the day’s close or held onto for a day or so. Problem is: I am only paper trading right now, which of course cannot simulate real time market buying and selling conditions. Despite this, 0.5% will likely beat the rush. Is this possible?

I really hate my job and want to quit. I want to be a day trader and make money in stocks. I’ve made so much money from stocks, but that was just by buying and sitting on them for a while. If I wasn’t working, I could watch stocks everyday.

So if your only income comes from stocks, how much do you typically make a month? What’s your strategy?

Suppose I had $100K….my plan would be to split it up among 10 stocks…so $10K each. And then whenever any stock makes a 3 to 5% gain, sell it off….and that’s $300 to $500 I just made. If all 10 stocks make a small gain of 3% in a day, that’s $3000!! I know I probably won’t be able to make that everyday, but if I could do that once a week I’d be very happy!!!

Does anyone here trade stock options?

Ok, I was recently laid off from my job. As a result I had to close my employee stock option account with the company that was holding the stocks.
I was hoping they would simply mail me a check but instead the only option was to get a stock certificate, it’s in my name along with my minor son as joint tenant.
So, do I just call a broker to sell them? Will there be a problem selling them as my son as joint tenant?
Also anyone have any idea on what the fee might be? This is the only stock that I have ever purchased and it was a direct debit from my pay check, and have never had to sell stock, so I am completely clueless as to how to go about it. I’ve visited a few sites such as Scott Trade, TD Ameritrade, E-Trade and have looked at their fees. I have no idea where this falls, it’s not an electronic trade, so it won’t be the advertised $9.99 per trade fee. Then there’s the commission….
So am I looking at $9.99 + whatever fee to handle paper stock (perhaps that would fall under the broker assisted trade? Which was an additional $25) + a % commission on top of that? And how is this calculated? Per share or by value?
So some guidance would be appreciated, some sort of an idea of what fees I might be looking at and any recommendations as to a good broker, I am looking for the lowest fees, this will probably be my only trade.
Lord I feel like an idiot, but this is something I have absolutely no experience in.

Not sure I know what you mean by what kind it is or if it’s listed. But it’s NASDAQ Global Select, whatever that means and it’s common stock if that helps.

I do not – the “free-trade” policies are really “unfair-trade” policies that harm the middle class’ standard of living by sending jobs over seas. The only people who benefit are stock holders and greedy corporate execs. When will America realize that their way of life is being stolen from them in the name of “global economy” and “free trade”? Is there still time to change to policies that will benefit the working class in America?

I sold a call option to buy a stock I own at $3.00. They paid $1.30 per share. So that brings them to a total cost of $4.30. What price would my option get exercised at? (they buy it at the $3.00 price with the option obviously… but what market price would my option get exercised @?)

hi there,

Migrating to another country like US, Australia or Canada is a phenomenon here in our country, philippines. I have so many friends from high school, and relatives who are in the US who worked as nurses, IT professionals, eventually settling there with their families. I have colleagues who migrated to australia or canada, because they said that the environment there is good for raising families, cleaner environment.

It seems I’m the only one left in the Philippines, except those who really have no options (you know what I mean, can’t really afford the cost of migration).

But as I take stock of my life in the Philippines, and I compare it with the families of my friends abroad. It seems that I’m really luckier.

- My husband is a professional engineer for a multi-national company. He’s given a car, gas allowance. He’s executive position.
- I also work for a foreign company, asst. manager position, with a stress-free job, my salary is not excellent, but considering the convenience of my job, I should be earning less. Recently, i was offered an expat position in another country, but i turned it down, bec. it’s not 1st world country. (honestly, if i’m gonna work abroad, better to work for a 1st world country right?)
- I have 2 live-in house helpers, one for each of my child (5 &2 yo). We call them Yaya here. These househelp take care of our laundry, cleaning the house, shopping for basics, cook our food and live with us, on-call anytime, even at night.
- We can take 2 o 3 vacations a year. Whether for abroad or local. Last year, we went to the US with my husband & eldest. I attended a work related event. Local vacations, we take the househelp with us, so they can manage the kids.
- If we need any help, like when the househelp takes vacations, we call on our moms, aunts, and nephews to take care of the kids, so our work are not disrupted.
- There are great schools in the Philippines, but the tuition fees are a bit costly, so, in the nearest future, great expensives are looming in the horizon, when the kids start big school.

The drawback i think is difficulty in saving. I mean, we haven’t have our own house yet. we are still renting. (in the phils. building a house is very expensive, you have to use up 1/3 of ur salary to pay for the mortgage). But we have investments in real estate. we have one in the city and one in the province for our future retirement home.

we haven’t really build our own home yet because we are still thinking, whether we should use the money to migrate to another country.

Am i crazy to leave this life in the lure of dollars, and cleaner, english-speaking environment? I also heard that in australia, us or canada, school is free! Wow!

But what i fear is the absence of househelp. It’s the major consideration, since I’ve always pursued a career here.

Please talk sense to me.

Hey guys I need help with that case, can’t figure out waht’s wrong with it.

Yergler Jewelry Manufacturing offers its employees a nonqualified stock option plan in which employees can purchase shares of stock for a discount from the current market price. The amount of the discount is equal to the number of years the employee has worked for Yergler times 0.25%. A worker with tens years at Yergler would get a discount of 2.5% while a worker with forty years would get 10%. Yergler the recognition of the expense and amortizes it over the lesser of the expected remaining period it will employ the employee or ten years.

in the stock market, what does option chains mean?

for example Sony Corp., the stock symbol is SNE. but then it shows you option chains and the symbols are the same but with two extra charecters like SNEXC, SNEKE, SNELI etc… What are these? and what does it mean?

While U.S. leaders focus on Afghanistan, Iran and other problems in distant regions, there is an alarming security problem brewing right next door. Violence in Mexico, mostly related to the trade in illegal drugs, is spiraling out of control. Even worse, it is increasingly apparent that the drug-traffickers are winning their fight against the Mexican government.

An incident in Nuevo Laredo illustrates just how brazen the traffickers have become and how contemptuous they are of government authorities. Los Zetas, the enforcement arm of the powerful and especially ruthless Gulf Cartel, openly sought recruits to their ranks, posting help-wanted signs and hanging a large banner across a major thoroughfare with the message: “The Zetas want you, soldier or ex-soldier. We offer a good salary, food and benefits for your family.”

The cartels have also thoroughly penetrated Mexico’s government institutions even the agencies that are supposed to be dedicated to battling traffickers. In recent weeks, prosecutors charged top officials in the Attorney General’s office with being informers for the drug organizations. They allegedly received payments of $150,000 to $450,000 per month for information regarding surveillance targets and potential raids. Those sums are more than even high-level law enforcement personnel can make in several years and lower-level personnel can make in several decades. With such resources at their disposal, and with the U.S. and global demand for illegal drugs remaining robust, it is no wonder that the cartels are winning.

Indeed, given Mexico’s increasingly precarious economic situation, their power is likely to grow especially in the next year or two. Mexico is suffering badly from the economic recession. For the first time ever, financial remittances sent home from Mexicans working in the United States declined in 2008. As the already meager job prospects in Mexico shrink further, the drug cartels will be one employer willing and able to pay for new hires.

How do I put a stock I already have onto an online account?

A number of years ago I received stock as a gift. It was before all of the online trading that takes place today. Recently, I opened a Sharebuilder account with ING, and have begun to buy and sell stocks through there. Is it possible to get the stock that I already own onto there? Or do I have to sell them through a broker the old fashioned way?

I haven’t been able to find any information about this online so any help would be appreciated.

i-flex shares are trading cheaper than the Oracle buyback price. The futures are even cheaper than spot. Why ?

There is a lot of confusing news about i-flex solutions stock. Oracle offered Rs. 2100 per share but the market fell to 1750 defying logic. Additionally the futures are trading even cheaper than spot further defying logic. The only way I can stitch a consistent story, based on what I see on the internet is:

1) First logic is that selling through stock exchange is tax advantageous compared to tendering shares to Oracle. This is bizzare. But if this is true, it explains why spot is at a discount to tender price. PErhaps no one wants to risk the refund from the taxman.

2) Second logic is that once Oracle acquires 90% controling stake, it can bully the remaining 10% minority shareholders. This bullying can for instance be in the form of giving preferential allocations to itself for further shares or call options, while not offering the same to minority shareholderss (thus diluting them).

If this is true, this is even more bizzare. Is there no protection for minority shareholders ?

Should i exercise ISO stock every other year or every year to minimize tax?

I have 8000 shares of a well-in-the-money ISO options. 4000 share are available now and the rest will be available at the end of next year. I want to exercise them and then sell one year later. To minimize tax, should i:

1) Exercise 4000 share in 1/2006, sell them in 1/2007, and then exercise the other 4000 share in 1/2007, and then sell in 1/2008?

2) Exercise 4000 share in 1/2006, sell them in 1/2007, exercise the other 4000 share in 1/2008 and then sell in 1/2009?

In other workds, should i exercise ISO stock every other year or every year to minimize tax? I do understand that i will need to pay AMT for my 1/2006 ISO exercise. Howevever, i won’t be able to recover that AMT tax if i exercise more in 1/2007, right? That seems to suggest i should wait till 1/2008 before exercising more ISO stock options.

Your help is greatly appreciated.
